What We're Doing

From the listening sessions and the proposed community solutions, we have already begun to implement a number of actions including:

• Partnering with stakeholders to provide new recruits with Community Experiential Learning Shifts to gain experience and understanding working with community members
• Delivering service-wide bias awareness training, and developing curriculum focusing on Trauma and the refugee experience, the 2SLGBTQ+ community and hate crimes
• Launching the Human-Center Engagement and Liaison Partnership (HELP) Unit and opening Wicehtowin (formerly known as the Union Building) to allow the EPS and its agency partners to better collaborate and coordinate support services within the community
• Launching the The Know Your Rights Campaign (translated into 16 languages) to inform Edmontonian’s of the rights and responsibilities of police officers and community members
• Establishing a number of councils to guide and inform work within the EPS, including: The Black Community Communications Council, Chief‘s Community Council, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity and Expression Council and the Nishohkemakewin Council
• Developing an Innovation Strategy/Community Solutions Accelerator
• Launching a marketing campaign to recruit members of underserved and diverse communities
• Planning is underway for ongoing community engagement and dialogue including a commitment from Chief McFee to participate in additional listening sessions

The Roadmap Report (What We Considered and What We're Doing) will be released in early 2022 and will include a comprehensive list of recommendations and action that EPS is committing to. These recommendations will impact policy, operations, process and procedure and will result in better outcomes for community.
